PrIsMa: Accelerating DAC Sorbent Discovery with Supercomputing & Citizen Science

Direct Air Capture’s future impact will be limited by the efficacy of its core chemistry and the material it deploys to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, known as sorbent. Today we have barely scratched the surface in our effort to identify the most effective sorbents that can one day enable DAC to reach gigaton scale. Advanced supercomputing has the potential to vastly accelerate discovery progress, particularly when linked to the power of open source/open access tools that enable anyone in the world to upload their materials for characterization. PrIsMa is a new platform that uses supercomputing to rapidly identify materials for use as DAC sorbents, and characterize their performance. It is the collaborative initiative of multiple university-based teams including Heriot-Watt University (HWU), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH Zürich), and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The ultimate impact of PrIsMa will be determined by the level of participation by researchers. In this webinar PrISMa co-principle investigators Prof. Susana Garcia and Prof. Berend Smit will join moderator Charles Yang (OpenAir) to discuss PrISMa’s origins, functionality and goals, and to invite researchers, students and DAC enthusiasts of all kinds to participate and help maximize the platform's impact.
